KICS-UET & wi-tribe unveil ‘wi-cam‘ Utility

wi-tribe Pakistan and Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science, University of Engineering and Technology (KICS-UET) unveiled ‘wi-cam’ at a press conference held at the UET campus on .

wi-cam, a CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Management and Administration tool, developed by students and graduates of KICS-UET using open-source technology, allows broadband companies, such as wi-tribe, to remotely configure and manage CPEs, while receiving instant notifications and access to live data.

Not only does this result in an improved customer care experience, it also enables customers to continue enjoying seamless connectivity.

wi-tribe entered into a strategic public-private partnership with KICS-UET to conceive, develop and launch a fully funded research and development program, enabling the innovation of this breakthrough feature-rich management tool.

With wi-cam, wi-tribe and UET jointly demonstrate that sourcing local development of critical customer service innovation is not only possible, but also essential to the proliferation of technical capabilities within Pakistan.

PTV SPORTS TV is a first 24-hours state-run sports channel aimed to provide sports news and international sports events for Pakistani viewers.

Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, on Wednesday Jan-11-2012, has inaugurated PTV Sports channel at PTV Centre Islamabad.

Test transmission of this sports channel had started from 30 December 2011 on AsiaSat 3S at an orbit of 105.5ºE.

The Prime Minister has also announced the regularization of the 350 more employees of Pakistan Television.

Earlier, Yousef Baig Mirza (MD PTV) told media in Multan that the venture will help promote Pakistan's national and regional sports, provide employment opportunities and "most importantly" motivate the younger generation to take up sporting activity.

The primary theme of this Seminar was to deliberate on future services and technologies for creating new opportunities across all segments of society, along with its associated challenges and strategies.

Speaking at the occasion, Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading markets in telecommunications.

He said Wireless Broadband is surely an important area of consideration for the industry in future. People are interested in mobility and connectivity at the same time. We will be observing new era of wireless broadband in the country.

Chairman PTA also emphasized on improved quality of telecom systems and services in future, and focus on telecommunication not only as an element of support but also as a driving force of economic growth. He said, that given the state of economy, population growth and other socio-economic indicators, PTA has envisioned that total telecom investments will reach US$ 2.4 billion by 2020, whereas the Telecom sector revenues would cross Rs. 620 billion by the same year. In the wake of growing trend of the mobile services, it can be predicted that the fixed line subscribers would more or less maintain the 5 million averages till 2020, while the broadband subscribers are expected to reach 19.5 million. The mobile subscribers are expected to be around 161 million.

Chairman further added that, the frequency harmonization is extremely important to achieve benefits of rapid development in wireless technologies; making it imperative for administrations allows changes in frequency assignments in national interest. Several countries have formulated Spectrum Re-farming Policy Framework.
In order to promote wireless broadband dissemination in rural areas, the PTA would plan ahead to devise national spectrum re-farming strategy. I strongly believe that the rapid growth along with future endeavours is beginning of reaping the associated business, entrepreneurship and social benefits of this exponential ICT infrastructure. It is the time to open doors of opportunities to our young innovative minds; and bridge the unseen gaps, he added.

PTCL has started relief operation for its flood affected employees in Sindh

PTCL has always supported its employees in the hour of need whether it was an earth quake, flood, aftermath of natural calamities or epidemic like dengue fever.

The recent rains coupled with floods have devastated a large area of Sindh and thousands of PTCL employees and their families have been displaced from their homes and have lost their belongings.

PTCL in order to ease the suffering of its employees and their families in rain and flood-affected areas is acting involved in providing them relief and work on their rehabilitation.

In this hour of need, PTCL has extended its initial support to them in the form of essential food items and medicines and has launched its emergency relief operations for its employees and their families across Sindh.

According to available details, relief bags have been distributed among the affected employees of Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Tharparker, Sanghar, Nawabshah and Larkana. The medical centers at Latifabad, Kotri, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah and Larkana have been converted into flood relief medical camps while three mobile medical units are also providing medical care to the people of remote flood affected areas.

PTCL has ensured that these camps and doctors are well equipped so that the maximum numbers of employees and their families benefit.

SEVP HR and ADMIN Syed Mazhar Hussain has expressed his sympathies for the affected members of the PTCL family in Sindh and has assured the organizations help and support to do the best possible for early recovery and rehabilitation of the affected employees. He hoped that the efforts and contribution by PTCL would help in providing relief to the effected member of the PTCL family.

PTCL aslo launches Dengue Awareness Campaign

According to available details, Pakistan Telecommunication Company limited has launched a comprehensive dengue awareness campaign regarding preventive measures against dengue virus in all the exchanges and colonies of PTCL.

The PTCL management has also directed all hospitals on its panels to provide best medical facilities to its employees and their family members admitted with dengue fever. All PTCL health centers are also on red alert to treat the employees suffering from dengue fever during early stage. Contact numbers of PTCL’s medical officials have also been shared with the employees and emergency transport facility has been ensured so that immediate remedial measures could be taken at the earliest to save the lives of the employees.

All exchanges and staff colonies are being sprayed with pesticides and fogging machines are being used to reduce the chance of dengue virus. Emergency committees and representatives from within PTCL have been formed headed by a team of qualified doctors of PTCL to deliver lectures on preventive measures against dengue virus at different locations.

PTCL financial result for the year ended June 30

The Board of Directors of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced the financial result of PTCL for the year ended June 30, 2011 in their meeting held in Islamabad today.

As per the press release issued on the occasion, PTCL Group revenues at Rs.104.6 billion for the year 2010-11 were 6% higher than the preceding year and profit after tax for the year is Rs. 8.4 billion. As such, the earning per share (EPS) of the group was Rs. 1.65 of which EPS for PTCL was Rs. 1.46. PTCL has already declared an interim cash dividend of Rs. 1.75 per share for the year 2010-11, the press release said.

President and CEO PTCL Mr Walid Irshaid commenting on the results said that during this period PTCL Group continued its strategy of innovation and futuristic approach which enabled the Group to show continuous growth. PTCL has positioned itself as the leading integrated telecom services provider in Pakistan, offering multiple solutions to business and household market segments while also extending vital services to other telecom operators in the country.

The latest worldwide data report shows that Pakistan is ranked as one of the top countries that registered high growth rate in broadband Internet penetration.

Pakistan has seen a boom in its telecom sector and information technology services in recent years which was recorded around 46.2 percent growth of subscribers and is placed fourth on the ranking list.

Sri Lanka is the closest South Asian country to Pakistan on the list of top countries which is at the 11th number with its broadband penetration growing in 30s while India lags at the 14th place in terms of broadband growth.

Serbia leads all countries surveyed with a 68 percent annual growth rate from first quarter 2010 to first quarter 2011, according to the July, 2011 Bandwidth Report.

Thailand and Belarus had greater percentage expansion than Pakistan, apart from top-rated Serbia during the period, globally.

Pakistan’s digital growth prospects have begun to look brighter lately. Besides having a large bilingual (English and Urdu) Internet using population, Pakistan’s software companies have carved a niche internationally in recent years.

According to government figures, the country’s information technology exports totalled $1.4 billion in the last financial year. Experts say the IT industry, which adds thousands of skilled workers every year, has the potential to hit multi-billion export target within next five to ten years. Additionally, mobile phone and wireless Internet usage are also expanding rapidly.

The survey data shows that China continues to lead the world in total broadband subscribers. As of the first quarter of 2011, China had over 135 million broadband subscribers, with the US at over 88 million subscribers in second place. Japan, Germany, and France followed China and the US in total subscribers.

He said, the government has taken several steps to increase the number of IT experts and engineers to achieve targeted results.

“Our focus has been the growth of skilled human resource pool for the country’s IT industry. In this regard, we have been providing financial subsidies, technical support and partnerships to companies, as well as Pakistan educational institutions,”

Another illegal Gateway Exchange Ceased in Multan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) alongwith Federal Investigation agency (FIA) has conducted a successful raid in Multan and seized three operational VoIP Gateways. According to details PTA and FIA teams through combined efforts not only traced the exact location but also carried out raid in areas of Altaf Town, Tariq Road, Multan.

One person running the setup was also apprehended during the raid. This success full raid, which was made possible because of continuous monitoring, shows the commitment and persistent efforts; PTA is putting in curbing the menace of grey traffic.

The confiscated illegal setup consists of gateways, Tellulars, Switches, Routers and number of SIMs of different operators. Moreover, the campaign against illegal telephony resulted in blocking of more than 60,000 mobile SIMs alongiwth IMEIs.

It may be added that PTA with the state of the art monitoring facility is observing the international traffic coming in to the country, round the clock. The aim of monitoring is to identify the illegal gateway exchanges and track the elements operating them. Such exchanges bring huge loss to the national exchequer as well as to the telecom sector.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen appreciated the joint efforts of PTA and FIA teams and also warned all those involved in the illegal telecom business to stop their activities, otherwise PTA shall take strict action against them as per the law.

Pakistan's First Satellite PAKSAT-1R Launched

PAKSAT-1R, commercially known as PAKSAT-1Replacement, manufactured exclusively for communication needs of Pakistan.

PakSat 1R is an advanced communications Geostationary satellite which was launched on 11 August 2011 for the replacement of PAKSAT-1.

This newly launched satellite will support all conventional and modern Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) applications and it will have a total of up to 30 transponders: 18 in Ku-band and 12 in C-band.

To ensure high degree of reliability / availability of the system, two (02) fully redundant Satellite Ground Control Stations (SGCS) would be established in Karachi and Lahore, one to act as the Main and the other as Backup respectively.

Long March-3B satellite carrier successfully launched PAKSAT 1R communications spacecraft for Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Lift-off occured at 16:15 GMT from Xichang Satellite Launch Center, China.

The National Command Authority (NCA) recently approved Pakistan’s Space Programme 2040 during its meeting at the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) on 14 July 2011, reports state news agency.

Earlier, the contract for the development of PAKSAT-1R was signed between Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) in October 2008 during the visit of the President of Pakistan to China.

China and Pakistan have more than 20 years of cooperation in Space Science, Technology and Applications.

PAKSAT 1R weighed 5115kg at launch and is based on DFH-4 [DongFangHong-4].

PAKSAT 1R will be brought into geosynchronous orbit in next days. After completion of in-orbit tests at 33.5 East it will be stationed on its final orbital position at 38 East.

PAKSAT 1R is planned to be in service for 15 years according to info given by China Great Wall Industry Corporation.

Inauguration of USF Telecom Project in Bahawalpur

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani inaugurated Universal Service Fund's (USF) project aimed at providing basic telecom services in Bahawalpur division's unserved areas. The ceremony was held at Bahawalpur circuit house on Thursday. He also inaugurated the Pakistan Software Export Boards’s (PSEB) web portal ( it.org.pk) launching ceremony and distributed merit certificates and medals among graduates of PSEB’s internship programme for Bahalwalpur and Multan division.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that USF's project in Bahawalpur manifests the determination of the government to provide basic telecom facilities to remote areas of Pakistan. He added that when his government took charge in early 2008, there were 888 unserved mauzas in the districts of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan. Now every village in these districts enjoys basic telecom facilities. He hoped that PSEB and USF, under MoIT's leadership, would continue to implement programs to strengthen Pakistan's IT industry, and increase access to ICT technologies to all Pakistani citizens.

The Prime Minister went on to say, "Skilled and trained human resource is absolutely essential for industrial growth and PSEB has been playing an active role in capacity-building of Pakistan’s IT industry. I am pleased that the IT graduates of rapidly-developing cities such as Bahawalpur and Multan have had an opportunity to benefit from such capacity-building initiatives of Ministry of Information Technology”.

Prime Minister also lauded the efforts of Pakistan Software Export Board for developing its web portal for the IT industry that will be helpful in facilitating local IT companies and highlighting Pakistan’s positive image round the globe.

To mark the launch of the USF's telecom services in Bahawalpur, the Prime Minister unveiled a plaque and made a telephone call at the remote village deep in the Cholistan desert. This project was implemented with a cost of Rs. 310 million, out of which USF contributed 248 million. The project will benefit approximately 250,000 people located in the remote areas of Bahawalpur division.

On this occasion, Federal Secretary Information Technology, Saeed Ahmed Khan, gave a detailed briefing to the Prime Minister about the Rural Telecom, Optic Fiber and Broadband programmes undertaken by Universal Service Fund (USF). He mentioned that Ministry of Information Technology, its affiliated companies and departments are conscious of the skilled man power needs of IT Industry and have started programmes for training young IT professionals in advanced IT technologies. He assured the Prime Minister that Ministry of Information Technology would actively work towards realizing government’s vision to develop young skilled professionals, for promotion of the IT industry in Pakistan.

In a statement, CEO OF Telenor- Christian Albech said, “We are proud to have become the only mobile operator to have completed a USF project that comprises a high number of solar-powered sites. We are honored to have provided connectivity to a quarter of a million unserved population of the area, and thus contributed to the socio-economic uplift of the people.”

PTA Signs MOUs to promote Telecom related Research

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Center for Advance Studies and Engineering (CASE) and Institute of Space Technology (IST) to promote telecom related research that would be beneficial for the institutions, the telecom industry as well as for the country.

These MoUs would also boost mutual cooperation in the relevant fields and would enhance the industry academia linkages. Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen, Member Technical PTA, Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, President CASE Dr. Abdul Khaliq and Vice Chancellor IST, Brig Imran Rehman attended the ceremony held at PTA Headquarters today.

On this occasion, Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that currently Pakistan has state of the art telecom networks while we are working on enhanced international communication links. We are planning to improve terrestrial links with Afghanistan, Central Asia and China which would help economy and flow of information in the country.

PTA would provide data on telecom sector and expertise to CASE and IST, reciprocally the Universities would encourage their students to undertake research in different areas of telecom sector.

He said that under the MoUs, PTA would help CASE and IST in identification of research areas. Similarly, CASE and IST would cooperate with PTA on different issues of trade, business and economy related to telecom sector. President CASE Dr. Abdul Khaliq and Vice Chancellor IST, Brig Imran Rehman, also spoke on the occasion and emphasized on the need of telecom research in the universities. They appreciated the fast growth in telecom sector and steps taken by PTA in this regard.

Main objectives of these collaborations are to support research integrated activities and to equip future leadership with theoretical and practical training in policy and regulatory issues of telecom sector. It is expected that the related organizations would benefit from this collaboration as young experts would be conducting research in the relevant fields of telecom with guidance of the faculty and PTA which could be converted into entrepreneurship. Industry is working on Venture Capital for entrepreneurship activities.

It may be mentioned that PTA being an academia friendly organization has already signed MoUs with COMSATS, NUST and UET Texila. PTA has been working continuously towards encouragement of research activities in telecom sector and taken number of initiatives to establish strong linkages with educational institutions for the promotion of telecom research.

PTA has taken significant steps that have received positive response from the all stakeholders. These initiatives include PTA Gold Medal Scheme, Essay Competition on World Telecom Day and cash prizes for best research project competition and SMS-based Information System for educational institutions.
